Dietary auxin may help patients to fight cancer

The efficacy of cancer treatment could be enhanced by phytohormone auxin (indole-3- acetic acid; IAA).

IAA is a is a plant hormone that is naturally present in root and shoot meristems but also produced by bacteria and fungi.

IAA has been shown to amplify the effects of chemotherapy for pancreatic, colorectal, and lung tumors. Tryptophan supplements increased IAA levels in the serum, and their combination with chemotherapy drugs resulted in decreased tumor weight. IAA and chemotherapy work additively to downregulate enzymes that detoxify reactive oxygen species (ROS), increasing the ROS levels and blocking tumor cell proliferation.

Incorporating IAA-rich products derived from microbes or plants, such as yoghurt, probiotics, microgreens, and fresh carrots into the diet may be promising for disease management.
