Cannabidiol therapy for symptom relief in endometriosis
Endometriosis is a neuroinflammatory disorder, characterised by the growth of extrauterine ‘lesions’ that are associated with debilitating symptoms, including chronic pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, and depression.
Mechanisms important to both the survival/growth of lesions and induction of pain pathways include cell proliferation, inflammation, and neuroangiogenesis.
Cannabidiol (CBD) acts on molecular targets implicated in the pathogenesis of endometriosis and its associated symptoms.
Thus, CBD is a promising therapeutic agent for endometriosis because it has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-angiogenic, antiproliferative, and neuroprotective effects.
