Breast cancer (BC) risk is affected by individual lifestyle choices, which have a measurable impact on the endogenous metabolome. 

Metabolomics based on liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is a powerful technology for the discovery of biomarkers of susceptibility to BC.

Biomarkers of susceptibility can indicate an individual’s risk of developing the disease and support personalized preventive measures.

During the last decade, the first metabolome-wide association studies (MWAS) on samples from prospective nested case–control studies investigating BC have been performed.
