Eliminating nucleolus-related inclusions

This study defines key elements of a protein quality control system that operates within the nucleus to eliminate stress-induced nucleolus-related inclusions.

The authors demonstrate that stress-induced nucleolus-related inclusions are eliminated during stress recovery, independently of the autophagy and nuclear export pathways.

They also show that the ubiquitin pathway is dispensable for inclusion formation, but essential for their elimination.

In addition, they demonstrate that nuclear proteasomes, the HSP70 chaperone, and the HUWE1 E3 ligase are required for inclusion elimination and depends on the production of RNA Pol I-dependent lncRNAs from intragenic spacer region (IGS).

The authors show that  IGS42 lncRNA localizes within stress-induced inclusions and is required for the recovery process.
