Newborn vulnerability to norovirus diarrhea
Norovirus infections are more severe in newborns.
Bile acids have both proviral and antiviral roles during norovirus infections as their metabolites bind to the viruses during infection.
The researchers demonstrate that microbiota and their bile acid metabolites protect from norovirus diarrhea, whereas host bile acids promote disease.
The researchers show that in mice that neonatal metabolic immaturity and breastmilk bile acids underlie the newborn’s heightened vulnerability to norovirus disease.
