Although distinct antiviral properties are exhibited by various organs, antiviral immune response in oral mucosa that act as a barrier for pathogens is not well understood.

Herpesviruses and human papillomaviruses, and recently SARS-CoV-2 and mpox infect and transmit through oral cavity.

In this Review, the researchers provide a broad overview of common viral infections and their manifestations in the oral mucosa and antiviral immune responses in the oral cavity.

The authors also discuss current mouse models for the study of oral viral infections.
