Peripheral neural-tumor microenvironment in cancer

It is well established that tumor microenvironment plays an important role in tumor growth.

Cancer cells actively release growth factors that stimulate tumor neo-neurogenesis, and the studies show that tumor neo-innervation propels tumor progression, inhibits tumor-related pro-infammatory cytokines, promotes neovascularization, facilitates metastasis and regulates immune exhaustion and evasion.

The researchers in this Review, describe the dynamics of the tumor microenvironment with an emphasis on tumor innervation by the peripheral nervous system.

They also outline the preclinical and clinical evidence of the benefits of targeting the nervous system in cancer.
