Strategies in anemia therapy

Although considerable progress has been made with respect to understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying anemia but the therapeutics translation remains elusive.

Impaired erythropoiesis is the hallmark of anemia and modulating erythropoietin-driven signaling pathways is one of strategies explored.

In addition, controlling iron metabolism using small molecules and oral supplements is another strategy evaluated.

Controlling regulatory genes and spliceosome proteins in erythroid cells are also explored to treat anemia.

Intervention also tried at neuronal signaling and mitochondrial dynamics in shaping erythropoiesis.

The authors in this review discuss the molecular and genetic factors underlying defective erythropoiesis and highlight current and emerging therapies.
