Tumor immunosurveillance and evasion by mitochondrial lipid metabolism

Mitochondria orchestrate lipid metabolism, while their function is simultaneously influenced by the lipid species that compose their structure. This intricate feedback loop is critical for immune cell functionality within the tumor microenvironment (TME).

Antitumor immune cells, such as CD8+ T cells, are highly vulnerable to the hostile TME, which disrupts their lipid metabolism and impairs their effector functions.

Conversely, pro-tumor immune cells, such as regulatory T cells, thrive in the TME by exploiting altered lipid metabolism to sustain their survival and immunosuppressive functions.

Modulating mitochondrial-driven lipid metabolism represents a promising strategy to restore immune surveillance and enhance antitumor immunity in the TME.
