Type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease caused by autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
Type 1 diabetes is associated with microvascular and macrovascular complications such as retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular disease.
The researchers found at least 1 or more auto-antibodies for insulin, glutamic acid decarboxylase 65, insulinoma-associated 2, and zinc transporter 8 in the blood of patients.
Lifelong use of insulin therapy is currently required for treatment of type 1 diabetes.
The researchers in this review describe in detail the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment for type 1 diabetes.
