How bile acids regulate lipid metabolism
As detergents, bile acids along with lipases govern the intestinal uptake of dietary fats.
By manipulating the bile acid pool size and composition, the researchers uncover how bile acids selectively regulate fatty acid absorption and gut hormone secretion to prevent obesity and metabolic disease.
The authors demonstrate that reduced bile acids prevented diet-induced obesity, increased anorectic hormones, suppressed excessive eating, and improved systemic lipid metabolism.
They also show that cholic acid preferentially solubilizes polyunsaturated fatty acids into mixed micelles for intestinal uptake.
