The blood–brain barrier

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the brain microenvironment from toxins and pathogens in the blood but is a significant challenge for drug development, as it restricts the entry of most therapeutics into the brain.

The researchers examine the structure of the blood–brain barrier and  the diverse mechanisms that facilitate the transport and exchange of molecules between the blood and the brain. ,

They also discuss the changes in BBB with aging, neurodegeneration, and injury.

They discuss how BBB disruption can accelerate disease progression, and review emerging drug delivery strategies.
