An alternative neural basis underlying leptin resistance

The mechanism of leptin resistance, the major contributor to diet-induced obesity (DIO), remains elusive. 

The researchers found that leptin receptor negative Arc GABAergic neurons (nonLepR neurons) were activated by HFD feeding.

Activation of Arc non-LepR neurons is sufficient to cause obesity and leptin resistance.

Inhibition of arcuate non-LepR neurons reduced/reversed DIO, revealing aberrant activation of these neurons as an alternative mechanism underlying leptin resistance.
