The neural basis of the insight memory advantage

Behavioral evidence shows insights, particularly those accompanied by strong Aha! experiences, enhance long-term memory formation.

The insight as prediction error (PE) hypothesis is proposed as a framework to explain why insight enhances memory by linking insight to PEs that trigger surprise, reward, and enhanced memory updating.

We discuss the involvement of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and hippocampus in schema (expectation) generation, updating, and memory encoding during insight, as well as the role of dopamine in reward PE signaling in hippocampus and the role of noradrenaline in enhancing arousal and salience for improved memory encoding.
