A role for respiration in coordinating sleep oscillations and memory consolidation

Sleep related brain oscillations help in the memory consolidation.

Recent studies have demonstrated a role for respiration in these rhythms and thus respiration could be leveraged to improve sleep’s memory function.

It is well established that sleep is affected in aging and neurodegenerative disorders.

By orchestrating the cardinal non-rapid eye movement (NREM) oscillations, namely slow oscillations, spindles, and sharp wave-ripples, respiration may coordinate the hippocampo-cortical crosstalk essential for memory consolidation.
