Depression modulation by exercise

Depression not only affects neural and cognitive processes of patients but exerts enormous negative impact on quality of life.

Although it is well known that exercise reduces depressive symptoms, but its antidepressant mechanisms are not well understood.

Aerobic exercise is known to decrease systemic inflammation, which in turn reduces dopamine transmission resulting in impact on effort-based decision making for reward.

The authors propose to reduce inflammation and boost dopamine transmission via exercise so as to improve symptoms of depression.
