How intestinal E. coli promotes profibrotic macrophages in Crohn’s disease

Intestinal fibrosis is a significant complication of IBD.

The researchers reveal that intestinal E. coli production of the metallophore Ybt sequesters zinc and stabilizes nuclear HIF-1a in macrophages, promoting profibrotic gene expression.

HIF-1a+ macrophages are abundant in fibrotic strictures of human CD patients, where they mark sites of disease.
