Gene therapy for aging and longevity
Genetics plays a critical role in modulating aging, and the genetic manipulation of the aging process in animal models has transformed our perception of aging.
Recent advances in preclinical models demonstrate that gene therapies can directly target fundamental mechanisms of aging and extend lifespan. Insights from long-lived species reveal novel targets that might be used in future gene therapies.
While the field of gene therapy has advanced rapidly, human applications have so far been largely limited to rare genetic diseases, and a major obstacle to overcome for longevity gene therapy is whole-body delivery.
Despite remaining translational and technical challenges, longevity gene therapy offers a potentially powerful strategy to delay age-related decline and prevent age-related diseases.
