Gpr54 deletion accelerates hair cycle and hair regeneration

Gpr54 is a widely expressed endocrine helps in maintaining onset of puberty through the activation of GnRH secretion. Although high expression of Gpr54 observed in in DPCs, its function in hair follicles is unexplored.

The researchers show that Gpr54 knockout (KO) in mice accelerates the hair cycle, promotes synchronized hair regeneration, and enhances transplanted hair growth.

Mechanistically, Gpr54 KO increases DPC activity and stimulates HFSC proliferation by reducing NFATC3 expression and lowers SFRP1 levels and activates Wnt/β-catenin.

They also demonstrate that  Gpr54 inhibitor, kisspeptin234, promotes hair growth and regeneration.
