How muscle repair derails after spinal cord injury
Why neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHOs) develop in muscles of victims of severe spinal cord injuries (SCIs) remains unknown.
The researchers demonstrate that a corticosterone spike, which follows SCI, is causal for NHO development.
They show that mice deleted for the GR gene (Nr3c1), which no longer develop NHO after SCI. Also, administration of clinical GR antagonists inhibits NHO development in mice with SCI.
