Human language network in cerebellum unraveled!

The precise role of cerebellum in cognition is not well understood. The researchers in this study systematically examine language-responsive regions of the cerebellum with precision fMRI.

They find one region (“LangCereb3,” spanning Crus I/II/VIIb) that closely resembles the neocortical language network in its selectivity for language and response to linguistic manipulations and  functionally connected to the neocortical language system.

This region engaged during comprehension and production, shows sensitivity to linguistic difficulty, and responds to both social and nonsocial sentences.

They also find three mixed-selective regions that respond to language but also to nonlinguistic inputs.
