MYB-related transcription factors control chloroplast biogenesis
Although GOLDEN2-LIKE (GLK) family of transcription factors play a major tole in chloroplast biogenesis, glk mutants contain residual chlorophyll, indicating that other proteins may be involved.
Analysis of a liverwort with a streamlined genome identified MYB-related transcription factors as regulators of chloroplast development in land plants.
The authors show that Mutants in MYB-related genes are pale and contain small chloroplasts.
They also demonstrate that genes encoding enzymes of chlorophyll biosynthesis are controlled by MYB-related and GLK proteins, whereas those allowing CO2 fixation, photorespiration, and photosystem assembly and repair require MYB-related proteins.
