Moving intentions from brains to machines

Brain–computer interface development has advanced rapidly but remains largely anchored in decoding motor output or visual attention signals.

Current approaches often overlook how the brain naturally organizes voluntary actions around goals and expected sensory outcomes.

Ideomotor theory offers a powerful yet underused framework for aligning brain–computer interface design with action planning in the human brain.

Reframing brain–computer interface decoding to prioritize users’ intended effects rather than overt movements may enable more intuitive and flexible control.

Advances in neural recording and artificial intelligence decoding now make it feasible to realize ideomotor-informed brain–computer interfaces with broader usability and scalability.
