Multiphasic homeostatic compensations in ALS

Spinal motoneurons progressively degenerate in ALS but the mechanisms remain unclear.

Through in vitro and in vivo electrophysiology and super-resolution microscopy, the researchers identify early-stage alterations in pre-motor spinal recurrent inhibition and monosynaptic Ia excitation in the mSOD1 mouse model of ALS.

The authors describe that such changes are multiphasic across disease progression, thus providing insights into disease pathophysiology.
