Traumatic-brain-injury-driven tauopathy treatment with VEGFC
Alzheimer’s disease and tauopathy risk increases with traumatic brain injury (TBI) but the mechanism that contributes to neurodegenerative disease remains poorly understood.
Brain lymphatic drainage defects has been linked to multiple neurodegenerative diseases and the authors investigated whether promoting brain lymphatic drainage recuperation following TBI.
The researchers find that therapeutic viral vector-based delivery of VEGFC into the meningeal compartment 24 h post-TBI ameliorates meningeal lymphatic drainage deficits post-TBI and protects against severe development of tauopathy, neurodegeneration, and cognitive decline in the PS19 mouse model of tauopathy.
