The subiculum composition and function

The subiculum, the primary hippocampal output region, exhibits rich excitatory neuron diversity that contributes to organizing information flow to downstream brain regions.

Integrating molecular, spatial, circuit, and functional data reveals discrete subiculum neuron subtypes with coherent multimodal identities.

These subtypes form spatially discrete and abutting subdomains that vary in the dorsal–ventral, proximal–distal, and superficial–deep axes. Ultimately, these subtypes appear to bias navigation, memory, motivation, and stress signals to distinct projection pathways.

A cell-type-centered perspective on the subiculum provides a framework for interpreting hippocampal computations and guiding future research.
