Transcriptional elongation in aging!
Aging affects both the levels and quality of RNA. The transcription elongation process itself is affected during aging.
Recent work shows that RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) stalling and cryptic transcription increase with age. Elongating RNAPIIs increase their speed in aged and senescent tissues.
Aged and senescent tissues display overall reduced transcriptional output, while that fraction of transcripts with sequence errors and splicing errors increases.
Chromatin changes may be an underlying common effector modulating the quality of RNA biosynthesis.
