The cancer hallmark ‘inducing angiogenesis’ has been changed to ‘inducing or accessing vasculature.’

 This is because tumours able to grow and produce metastases in the absence of angiogenesis have been discovered.

The mechanism by which cancer cells exploit preexisting vessels has been named ‘vascular co-option.’

These nonangiogenic tumours are aggressive and resistant to antiangiogenic treatments.
