Vitamin D and major chronic diseases
There are ongoing debates regarding the effect of vitamin D on the incidence of major chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
Emerging evidence suggests the existence of a threshold effect, whereby vitamin D supplementation to avoid 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels below a particular cut-off may be efficacious for the prevention of chronic disease.
Although the majority of current randomized controlled studies (RCTs) showed either no or only modest benefits of vitamin D supplementation in reducing the risk of chronic disease, it is noteworthy that these trials predominantly involved participants with adequate vitamin D levels, highlighting the need for high quality RCTs in populations with vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency.
