Regulation of cardiac nervous system!
New methods and model systems have identified significantly more complexity and diversity in subtypes of sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sensory neurons innervating the heart than previously recognized.
Recent data reveal that sympathetic ganglia and the intrinsic cardiac nervous system are both sites of signal integration and modulation.
The classic model of ‘bulk’ transmission in the heart has been replaced by an understanding that the neurocardiac junction is a synapse-like structure containing tethered signaling components on the post-synaptic cardiac membrane similar to the CNS.
Cardiac autonomic neurons exhibit substantial plasticity in disease, which can contribute to development of cardiac pathology. Neuromodulation therapies may reverse or prevent this plasticity.
