Rewiring the human brain map
Anatomical connectivity underlies brain function, yet technological barriers have limited direct mapping of human brain wiring.
Advances in imaging, histology, and data integration may enable mesoscale human brain connectome maps within the next decade.
An axon-centric approach, focusing on complete axonal trajectories, will likely be critical to achieving such maps. Such an approach will also allow for multimodal integration across techniques, bridging species, spatial resolutions, and scales.
Scaling from single-brain maps to population-level or in vivo connectomics remains a key challenge.
Mesoscale human connectomic maps may inform improved neuromodulation approaches in clinical contexts.
