Regulating localization of synaptic proteins

The conserved neuronal protein Pumilio regulates the localization of mRNAs encoding synaptic proteins.

The researchers show that RNA-binding protein Pumilio directly binds mRNAs encoding synaptic proteins in the Drosophila brain.

They also demonstrate that Long 3′ UTR isoforms of mRNAs are depleted in synaptosomes and enriched in the soma of neurons.

Pumilio preferentially binds long 3′ UTR isoforms to restrict expression of synaptic proteins in neuronal cell bodies.
