Translating sleep circuit modulation from animal models to humans

Sleep plays critical role in memory consolidation, metabolic regulation and neural homeostasis and sleep disorders are prevalent across neurodegenerative, psychiatric and neurological conditions. 

This review discuses advances in the control of sleep circuits in animal models, as well as the effects of direct brain stimulation on sleep in humans.

They also discuss significant differences in circuit architecture across species, technical capabilities and regulatory constraints necessitate novel approaches for human sleep modulation.

They propose new strategies to bridge the translational gap and improve sleep disorder treatment.
