Mechanism to promote tumor cell survival in arginine deficiency

Nutrient supply is essential for cancer cell growth. Several nutrient sensors have been identified in a cell but information on Arginine sensor is lacking.
The researchers using screening strategies in human cancer cell line identified BAG2 as an arginine sensor through direct binding to arginine.
In response to arginine deficiency, BAG2 modulates β-catenin degradation and stabilizes ATF4 by releasing SAMD4B, thereby revealing a non-canonical mechanism of arginine sensing for cancer cell survival.
