Biological differences between microglial model systems

The researchers generated a comprehensive microglia proteome database, identifying over 11,000 proteins. Among them over 5,600 proteins are shared.

Fundamental differences between ex vivo and in vitro microglia associated with protein synthesis, metabolism,  inflammatory marker expression and Alzheimer’s disease-associated proteins.

The authors found that changes are restored by engrafting in vitro cells into the brain, with xenografted human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-derived microglia closely resembling microglia from the human brain.
