Childhood anaesthesia and autism risk
The study used data for children aged 0–3 who received at least one exposure to general anaesthesia. Also, mice were exposed to sevoflurane for 2 h on postnatal days 5–7, and changes in behavior related to autism were evaluated.
The researchers report that early childhood exposure to general anaesthesia is associated with increased autism risk, supported by findings of autism-like behaviours in mice exposed to sevoflurane.
