Red blood cell (RBC) formation, or erythropoiesis, has distinct metabolic requirements that support lineage commitment, differentiation, proliferation, and terminal maturation. 

Interdisciplinary and multiomic approaches have uncovered new pathways, including a glutamine metabolic switch, as specialized adaptations essential for erythropoiesis and RBC function.

Shared and disease-specific metabolic alterations have been identified across RBC disorders, offering therapeutic potential, though their regulation and functional significance remain incompletely understood.

Metabolism-directed therapies are emerging as promising strategies for managing RBC disorders. Bridging hematology, metabolism, and systems biology will be critical for identifying metabolic vulnerabilities and translating them into effective diagnoses and treatments.
