GPCR trafficking and cAMP signaling at endomembranes

Most of the physiological processes are controlled by membrane bound, seven transmembrane, signaling receptors called G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs).

It is not yet clear on how GPCR-mediated elemental signaling reactions are organized in intact cells although many of the biochemical reactions are now elucidated to atomic resolution in cell-free preparations.

The authors in this review discuss GPCR-initiated signaling through the classical cAMP pathway.

They review the established concepts and then discuss the still-evolving understanding that ligand-induced GPCR signaling occurs from endomembranes as well as the plasmalemma.
