How pre-transplantation ischemia impairs liver regeneration

The author show that liver pre-transplantation ischemic conditions damage the primary cilia (PC) of biliary epithelial cells (BEC).
However, elimination of PC induces cellular senescence in BEC, which cannot proliferate, leading to persistent biliary injury.
The researchers demonstrate that senescence negatively impacts primary cilia structure and triggers a negative feedback loop that further impairs regeneration.
They also demonstrate that targeted PC interventions prevent biliary injury and promote regeneration.
