Pancreatic beta cell maturation and function in adolescent mice is impaired by chronic intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting (IF) is generally associated with improved metabolism, but whether there are age-dependent limitations of IF needs to be explored.

The researchers now demonstrate that while IF improved b cell function in old and middle-aged mice, long-term IF impaired b cell maturation and function in adolescent mice.

The authors show that β cell maturation and function scores are reduced in young mice. In human islets, a similar pattern is observed in type 1 (T1D), but not type 2 (T2D), diabetes, suggesting that the impact of chronic IF in adolescence is linked to the development of β cell dysfunction.
