Improving pancreatic β cell function in type 1 diabetes by modulating gut microbiome

The roles of gut microbiome and secondary bile acid dysfunctions in type 1 diabetes (T1D) is not clearly understood.

The researchers identify distinct gut microbial signatures with favoring harmful bacteria over beneficial ones and dysregulated bile acid metabolism in T1D.

Modulating the gut microbiome and metabolites improved glycemic control, reduce daily insulin dose, and reduce inflammation.

The enhanced synthesis of secondary bile acids, notably LCA and isoLCA, was observed along with improved islet function following microbial transplantation, underscoring the importance of bile acid metabolism in both the pathogenesis and therapeutic approaches for T1D.
