Low-dose irradiation of the gut improves the cancer immunotherapy efficacy

The effect of local radiotherapy in cancer patients is not yet clear.

The researchers propose a mechanism accounting for the abscopal effects of radiotherapy on distal non-irradiated cancer lesions under immunotherapy.

In eight retrospective studies and a prospective trial, the authors show that intestinal low-dose irradiation (ILDR) increases the clinical benefits of immune checkpoint inhibitors or chemotherapy in a dose-dependent manner.

The authors show that gut composition governs the abscopal effects of ILDR combined with anti-PD-L1 and various strains of Christensenella minuta selectively boost the anti-cancer efficacy.
