Metalloproteinases epigenetic drivers and metastasis
Metalloproteinases (MPs) play major roles, not only during development and hemostasis, but are also crucial drivers of cancer growth and metastasis.
Due to the expression of MPs in multiple cell types composing the tumor and their diverse action in different normal conditions, MP inhibitors have had limited therapeutic efficacy and severe side effects.
Several epigenetic drivers of MP expression have already been identified in physiological and pathological conditions, representing indirect targets.
The development of epigenetics targeting drugs and their testing in clinical trials are currently more advanced than those of MP inhibitors.
