Role of adaptor protein SKT in synaptic functions

Disruption of postsynaptic density (PSD) consisting of network of signaling molecules, adaptor proteins and receptors, may lead to  neurological diseases but all the molecules in the PSD are not completely identified and characterized.

The researchers identify the postsynaptic scaffold SKT as an emerging member of the postsynaptic molecular complexes. The authors show that SKT localizes within dendritic spines and binds to PSD-95 and SHANK3.

SKT deletion causes dendritic spine defects associated with electrophysiological abnormalities, stereotypic behavior, and motor and cognitive deficits.

These data highlight the crucial role of SKT in synapse maturation and function.
