Ulcerative colitis
Ulcerative colitis (UC) has no cure and no ‘gold standard’ diagnostic test, so there is an urgent need for effective diagnostic tools and treatments.
More specific and non-invasive biomarkers that can diagnose UC early before the onset of clinical symptoms are required. Circulating microRNAs and exosomes have shown promise in monitoring disease activity and predicting flares without requiring invasive procedures.
Recent trials of combined therapy using biologics or biologics combined with small-molecule drugs showed a significantly higher clinical response than monotherapy.
Receptor inhibitors – for example, Janus kinases, interleukin 23 (IL23), and Smad7 – and fatty acid modulators are under current investigation and have the potential for clinical efficacy.
