Highly specialized astrocyte subtype identified!

In addition to neurons, the central nervous system contain glial cells, of which, astrocytes are predominant cell type and have many discrete heterogeneous subtypes. 

The researchers show that molecularly and morphologically specialized astrocytes make up the brain and spinal cord surface, thereby creating the glia limitans superficialis.

These astrocytes selectively express the gene Myocilin, and their cell bodies create the brain surface and have processes that reach into the parenchyma.

These astrocytes are  evolutionarily conserved from zebrafish, rodents, and non-human primates to humans.
