Exposure to autoimmune disorders is associated with increased Alzheimer’s disease risk

The researchers use robust statistical approaches with electronic health records for >300,000 individuals to identify a clinical risk association between autoimmune conditions and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
The association is consistent across UCSF and Stanford electronic health record databases and case-control and cohort study designs.
The researchers fond that autoimmune disorders associate with increased AD risk in both sexes, but the AD sex disparity remains in those with autoimmune disorders: women exhibit higher AD prevalence than men.
The increased risk highlights immune dysregulation as a potential contributor to AD.
