Gut microbiota and childhood epilepsy

Epilepsy in children treated with anti-seizure medications, but up to one third of children do not respond to them.

Microbiota–gut– brain axis has been implicated epileptogenesis and drug resistance.

The researchers in this review summarize relationship between microbiota, its metabolites, and discuss microbiota modulation could be used as a therapeutic strategy.

The authors also discuss microbiota producing neuromodulatory molecules and pro-inflammatory gut bacteria.

They also evaluate the role of ketogenic diet and pre/pro/synbiotics in various pediatric disorders.
