Mechanisms of axonopathy
Long tail of the neuronal cell body called axon play a critical role in regulating neuronal homeostasis.
Axons are first to degenerate (axonopathy) in various neurodegenerative diseases.
In this review, the authors briefly summarize the structure and function of axons, and highlight recent advances in the understanding of the role of axons in health and disease.
They discuss that axons are a potential target for developing novel therapies for neurodegenerative diseases.
