Neural reactivation supports memory formation when events end
Neural reactivation shapes memory as experiences unfold. At event offsets, recently encoded patterns are rapidly reinstated, creating a privileged window for memory processing.
Evidence from electrophysiology, imaging, and modeling shows increased neural similarity between activity at event completion and the preceding episode. The magnitude of this similarity predicts later recall, marking these moments as optimal for stabilizing new representations.
The researchers propose that these brief reinstatements, coordinated by hippocampal– cortical interactions and often accompanied by ripples, serve multiple complementary functions: they stabilize newly formed traces against interference, bind relational features into a coherent event index, integrate episodes into neocortical schemas, and preserve temporal continuity across event boundaries.
